RSU is a modern, prestigious university acknowledged in Europe and the world in the fields of healthcare and social sciences, with the human being at its centre of attention. Our mission is to train highly qualified experts in the fields of healthcare and social sciences, so that they can serve the society of Latvia, the European Union, as well as the world. So that the knowledge, skills and attitude they have acquired during their studies would comply with EU standards and humane traditions, and it would form a firm basis for lifelong learning. Our mission is to develop scientific activities according to the RSU profile by establishing a basis for acquiring a status of a scientific university.

Having grown out of Rīga Medical Institute, Rīga Stradiņš University offers medicine and health care studies and dynamic social science studies steeped in historic traditions, but incorporating the latest world trends.

RSU's teaching staff are professionals in their areas of expertise and are opinion leaders in society. Our diplomas open the way to interesting professions in both Latvia and in the wider world. Former students of the University's medicine and healthcare programmes treat patients in Latvia’s largest hospitals and outpatient clinics. The former president of the Republic of Latvia Valdis Zatlers (pictured below), who previously had a successful career in the fields of traumatology and orthopaedics, is an alumnus of RSU.

The study system at RSU is based not only on memorising, but also on the development of analytical and critical thinking. The social sciences study programmes use the module system, where a maximum of three subjects are studied at one time and tests are taken at the conclusion of studies in each respective subject.

You can start creating your academic career during your time at the University: among many other societies, there is also the Student Scientific Society. Our students produce more than 200 scientific research papers each year.

RSU has an excellent teacher-student ratio, which stands at 1:16. RSU has a total of 5,964 students, the majority of which are full-time students, and 367 academic staff members. 4,742 students study in undergraduate programmes, while 1,222 study in master’s degree and doctoral programmes. RSU has a considerable number of international students, currently standing at 11.2 % of the total student number. At the Faculty of Medicine, where the majority of international students study, the number of international students stands at 40 %. The majority of international students studying at RSU are from Germany, Sweden, Norway and UK, however there are students from many other countries, more than 30 altogether.
